Turbo trainers
October 3, 2010 | 6:57 amI spent nine hours on the turbo trainer yesterday, sat in the foyer of ASDA Sheffield, fundraising for Diabetes UK.
I’ve never spent anything like that amount of time on it before. It was a similar amount of time spent in the saddle to our London to Paris cycle challenge. There, as yesterday, we would set off about 9am and cycle all day until about 6pm.
I was amazed last night how much more tired I was doing the same thing on the turbo trainer when compared to real cycling.
When I wasn’t sat on the turbo trainer I made of note of how long I was off for on my stopwatch and spent a total of 1 hour 20 minutes off the bike. Either nipping to the loo, letting someone else have a go or resting the legs. I think this was very similar amount of time to the breaks we took on the actual ride.
And there are no hills on a turbo trainer. It was set at a very light setting so I wasn’t doing that much work and I didn’t check it accurately but reckon I was averaging about 75rpm cadence. Nice and steady.
So why so knackered? I shall ponder more in this today, my second day in the saddle.
