Collecting at ASDA – for the second time
September 5, 2011 | 10:51 amSaturday was our second time this year collecting outside the ASDA at Handsworth in Sheffield. We got there a little late, so I didn’t start cycling until just after 9.20am.
We have done it a few times now and I think we have got it down pretty slick. We try hard not to get in the way of people as they are coming in or out, but I also make a consicous effort to say “hello” to as many people as possible, so they notice we are there and collecting for Diabetes UK.
Would you put some spare change in this man’s pot? It’s surprising how many do. Having the children there certainly helps too, as they engage well with other children when shoppers with children stop for a second.
We had balloons and stickers to give away to anyone who donated. Grace is showing off the balloons on some sticks that ASDA kindly gave us.
I eat and drink on the bike but I can’t last from 9.30ish till 5pm without going to the toilet, so I had two 10 minute comfort breaks during the day. Whilst I did, Samuel took over…
7 and a half hours on the bike burns a lot of rubber. On a turbo trainer, all that rubber builds up in a little pile.
Now that we have counted all the money, we raised just over £500 on the day, which is better than the last day in July.
It brings our grand total now to £1,174 – so we are well over half way towards our target of £1,950.
The final challenge of my Four4aCure series starts this Friday, so I am now in final preparation mode. This mainly involves keeping an eye on the weather forecast and hoping it’s not as wet as the Coast2Coast ride!
