Better news!
April 15, 2013 | 4:31 pmI’ve seen a physio this afternoon whose given me the once over!
Apparently, I’ve got a combination of issues with my leg – It’s never straightforward is it…?
Some soft tissue damage in the calf and some nerve irritation caused by tension in my back, would you believe it?
Both are linked to over training and are often seen in first-time marathon runners. The tissue damage comes obviously from running as I increase distances. The nerve irritation is caused by fatigue – as I run further and get tired, I tend to run out of shape, pulling the nerves out of shape!
The upshot – well I’m not going to be pain-free by the weekend but I should be able to run the marathon without doing myself any permanent damage!
So, I’m going to go for it. I’ll just have to deal with the pain as I go round!
I’d just like to say thank you to all those well-wishers who’ve messaged me since my last post – thank you for all your kind words!!

Hi Gareth
The very best of luck for Sunday. I know how you feel! Entered my first ever marathon last Saturday (Exmoor) and came in at 5hrs 42mins with all kinds of pain going on including, as you mentioned my back was hurting by the end and the knees weren’t great, damn those hills!
If its any concellation, the stairs were tricky on Sunday and Monday but there’s no permanent damage!
Take your time and enjoy!
Good Luck !!
Matt
Red Bull and Ibuprofen are also a great combo!
